At Screenly, we’ve always believed in making connections, not just between screens and content, but also between people. As a remote company, we’re continually seeking innovative ways to keep our team engaged and connected beyond the workplace. One of the ways we achieve this is through our Screenly Strava Club, where we track activities and motivate each other to be more active.
Recently, seeing teammates’ activity stats inspired me to push myself, and I ended up completing my longest ride yet at 20.71 km. I enjoyed the ride through my village, surrounded by endless greenery and the untamed beauty of the wild. That kind of friendly motivation is what makes this club so special.
Until now, the leaderboard was only visible inside the Strava app, which is excellent for personal tracking, but not ideal for celebrating achievements together. That’s why we built the Strava Club Leaderboard Edge App.
What It Does
This Edge App creates a beautiful, real-time leaderboard for your Strava club, perfect for office displays, gyms, or clubhouses. It automatically pulls in fresh activity data and showcases member rankings with key performance metrics:
- Distance covered
- Time spent
- Elevation gain
- Number of activities
These statistics provide a comprehensive view of both individual and team performance, fostering friendly competition and celebrating success.
Behind the Build
The first version of the app was created by our CEO, Viktor Petersson, as a fun side project. Later, I took over to refine and polish it for public release. One significant technical challenge was handling Strava’s short-lived access tokens, which expire after six hours and must be refreshed regularly to continue pulling data. After reviewing Strava’s documentation, I implemented a refresh system using the provided refresh tokens, ensuring the leaderboard remains live without interruption.

Another important detail is that we store all credentials, API keys, and tokens in the Edge App settings as secure secrets. This means, as a developer, I don’t need to worry about managing sensitive data myself; Screenly takes care of it securely, allowing me to focus purely on building features. When it came to design, I made sure the app’s branding aligned with Strava’s official guidelines. With the help of our Chief Design Officer, Adnan, we created a simple, clean logo that feels right at home in both the Screenly and Strava ecosystems.
