Building a culture of wellness at Screenly

Building a culture of wellness at Screenly

During last year’s annual summit, our CEO Viktor talked about wanting to make wellness a real priority for the organization, not just something that lives on documentation, but something we could actually build habits around.

He wasn’t pushing for a big lifestyle overhaul or launching some top-down challenge. It was more of a quiet nudge: we’re a remote team, most of us spend our days in front of screens, and if we’re not intentional about movement and well-being, it’s easy to let it slide. The message was simple: let’s support each other in staying active and healthy.

That conversation ended up shaping what became Screenly’s wellness program. The goal was not to track steps or measure output. It was about giving people the tools and motivation to take care of themselves in whatever way made sense.

As of writing, the program has two parts:

  • A Strava leaderboard that turns movement into a friendly monthly raffle
  • A $500 yearly wellness budget that covers everything from gym memberships to health check-ups

What we’ve seen since launching it is that small efforts add up. A little structure, a bit of fun, and a lowkey way to show up for your own health goes a long way.

The starting point

What began as a fun side project by our CEO, Viktor, eventually became a proper Edge app. The app pulls activity data from a Strava club and displays it in a clean, always-up-to-date leaderboard. Read more about the Strava Club Leaderboard Edge App here.

Once we had it running, we figured - since the structure is already there, why not turn it into a friendly internal contest? That’s what led to the idea of a monthly raffle with simple, inclusive mechanics built around consistency and participation.

We realized the Strava Leaderboard had a lot more potential. So we went further.

Part one: The Strava leaderboard raffle

To make movement more fun and consistent, we launched a monthly raffle tied to activity logged in our Screenly Strava club. The idea is simple: the more consistently you move, the more chances you have to win.

We designed the system to reward effort and regularity, not just intensity. Whether it’s a walk, bike ride, run, or yoga session, if you’re showing up and logging your workouts, you’re in the game.

Each activity earns raffle entries, and at the end of the month, we randomly draw three winners for $25 gift cards. It’s lighthearted, low-pressure, and surprisingly motivating.

What’s worked well is how simple and consistent the format is. It doesn’t demand a big time investment or a competitive mindset, it just adds a bit of structure around staying active. For most of us, it’s more about keeping a light (or intense) rhythm of movement going throughout the week. The raffle adds a small incentive, but the real value is that it helps make wellness feel more accessible and part of the everyday.

Part two: The wellness budget

Alongside the monthly raffle, every team member also gets an annual wellness budget. This is meant to remove friction when investing in your health. Whether you want to sign up for a boxing class, buy a standing desk, or finally get that overdue health screening, the budget is yours to use.

What it covers

  • Preventive care like physical exams or lab screenings
  • Gym memberships, fitness classes, or sports club fees
  • Personal training or structured fitness programs
  • Equipment that directly supports your wellness (yoga mats, weights, etc.)

We’ve seen team members use this for all kinds of things: gym memberships, online fitness subscriptions, and more. The variety shows that health looks different for everyone - and that’s the point. The program isn’t here to tell you what to do. It’s here to support what works for you.

Why this matters

Wellness programs can easily fall into the background. But when they’re designed with intention, they quietly shape how people feel about work - and how they show up for it.

When you feel supported in your health, everything flows a bit easier. You focus better, you think more clearly, and you have more energy to contribute. The goal here isn’t to push anyone toward a finish line. It’s to help people find routines that are sustainable and personal.

At Screenly, we’re always thinking about how to build things that last. That doesn’t just mean strong infrastructure or good processes, it also means supporting the people who make all that possible.

What we’ve learned so far

Like most internal programs, this one is evolving. Every few months, we will revisit the structure based on how people are engaging.

Here are a few takeaways from the first two months:

  • Make it visible: Posting Strava updates in Slack has been a great motivator. People enjoy seeing where others are walking, running, or working out.
  • Keep the rules simple: One workout per day with heart rate tracking and minimum duration of 20 minutes. Easy as 1,2,3.
  • Recognize effort, not perfection - By focusing on streaks and consistency, we’re seeing participation from people who aren’t competitive athletes.
  • Offer flexibility- The budget gives people room to invest in their own version of wellness, without being boxed in by a one-size-fits-all approach.

We’re also exploring new ideas for the future. Additional raffle categories like “Most Consistent” or “Best Photo” may be added based on engagement and feedback.

What’s next

One of the things that makes Screenly special is that we build culture intentionally through small, thoughtful programs like this.

The initial goal was simple: to support each other in staying healthy. But over time, it’s become something more. It’s a shared rhythm that cuts across time zones. A way to stay connected. It’s a quiet reminder that showing up for work starts with showing up for yourself.

We’ll keep listening, adjusting, and supporting our team in ways that feel meaningful. And we’ll keep moving - on Strava, in Slack, and everywhere in between.
