Screenly Sync 0x04: May updates from Screenly

Welcome to the 5th edition of Screenly Sync, where we share the latest updates across our platform, product, and community.

This month, our focus has been heavily centered on security, compliance, and enterprise networking. From rolling out passwordless authentication and new privacy features to exploring AI-driven security for small businesses, here is everything we shipped and discussed in April.

Product updates

No more passwords in Screenly

no more passwords

We are removing traditional passwords entirely in favor of a passwordless authentication model. Passwords are too often reused and exposed in external breaches, creating unnecessary risks. Going forward, email and password logins are being replaced with single-use, time-sensitive codes sent directly to your email. This makes the login process simpler and significantly reduces the attack surface. If your organization uses SAML, Google, GitHub, or Microsoft for SSO, your workflow remains unchanged.

Privacy mode

Troubleshooting displays in secure environments just got safer. As part of our efforts to make secure digital signages, we have introduced Privacy Mode, a new feature designed to keep sensitive deployments protected by completely disabling screenshots in diagnostic reports. This ensures that confidential data on your screens is never inadvertently captured or transmitted when pulling device diagnostics. Try it today and share your feedback!

Linked workspaces

privacy mode

Organizations often use multiple workspaces to keep departments, locations, and security boundaries separate. While this separation is essential for access control, it previously made billing and license management a fragmented and manual process across different departments.

To solve this, we are introducing Linked workspaces. You can now designate a parent workspace that acts as a central hub for your organization. This parent workspace consolidates billing into a single invoice and holds a shared pool of screen licenses.

Child workspaces can be linked to the parent, allowing them to automatically draw from the shared license pool as needed. If one factory or department adds a screen, it simply uses an available license from the shared pool without requiring a separate purchase or manual reallocation. You get the security of isolated workspaces with the simplicity of centralized administration.

This feature is available on the Enterprise plan. Head to your Workspace settings and look for the new Linked workspaces tab to get started.

CISA warns of digital signage vulnerabilities

 digital signage vulnerabilities

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recently added a Samsung MagicInfo vulnerability to its exploited list. Despite a patch existing since August 2024, many systems remain unpatched in the field.

This highlights a structural flaw in on premise signage: relying on operators for manual patch management. When vendors ship a fix, there is often no visibility or enforcement to ensure it gets applied, leaving networks exposed to years old vulnerabilities.

The most effective fix isn’t sending better patch reminders, it is removing the manual step entirely. Every Screenly player updates itself automatically. The update is cryptographically signed before it leaves our infrastructure and verifies its own integrity before it applies. No manual intervention, no maintenance windows, and no 22 month exploit windows. Until the industry adopts automated patching as a standard, incidents like this will continue to happen.

Building a culture of wellness at Screenly

 digital signage vulnerabilities

As a remote company where most of us spend our days in front of screens, we wanted to be more intentional about our well-being. We recently rolled out an internal wellness program featuring a $500 annual wellness budget and a monthly Strava leaderboard raffle. It’s not about intense athletic competition, but about building consistent habits, sharing our daily movement, and supporting each other in staying healthy.
