A passkey is stored by your device or password manager and unlocked with biometrics or a PIN. It cannot be phished or reused, and there is nothing to type.
Available since June 2026, and built on WebAuthn, which every current Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox supports.
Adding one
- Open your avatar menu to reach your account settings, then go to Security.
- In Passkeys, choose to add one.
- Give it a name that identifies the device. The field suggests
MacBook Touch ID, which is exactly the right shape. - Confirm with your biometrics or PIN.
Then sign in with Sign in with Passkey.
Naming matters
The name is the only way to tell your passkeys apart later, and the moment you need to tell them apart is when a device has been lost and you are deciding which entry to delete.
MacBook Touch ID and iPhone are useful. Passkey 1 and Passkey 2 are not.
Where one can live
A biometric device: Touch ID, Face ID, a fingerprint reader, Windows Hello.
A hardware key such as a YubiKey.
A password manager: iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, a Chrome profile.
A passkey in a password manager syncs across your devices, which is convenient and means the security of your Screenly account rests on that manager. A passkey on a hardware key does not sync, which is less convenient and harder to compromise remotely.
Several is the point
There is no limit, and one per device is the usual arrangement. Add one on your laptop and one on your phone, and losing either leaves you with a working route in.
The section lists them all, searchable by name, and any can be deleted.
When a device is lost
Sign in with a one-time email code, delete the passkey for the lost device, and add a new one on its replacement.
You are not locked out: the email code always works. That is also the reason the email address on your account has to be one you can reach.
