A Fire TV Stick is one of the cheapest ways to put a display under management. Screenly is published on the Amazon Appstore, so the device installs the app directly and joins your fleet like any other screen.
For a screen showing a production dashboard or a rotation of company notices, the hardware cost stops being a reason not to do it.
How it works
Install Screenly from the Amazon Appstore and open it. The device shows a pairing code, you enter it in your dashboard, and the screen starts playing.
Fire OS is built on Android, so a Fire TV behaves like an Android device once Screenly is running on it.
What it is good for
Adding screens cheaply, and adding them quickly. A Fire TV Stick plugs into any display with an HDMI port, which means an existing television becomes a signage screen without touching the display itself.
Sites where hardware goes missing or gets damaged. Replacing a stick is inexpensive enough that it is not a project.
What to weigh against it
A Fire TV is a television accessory, so it ships configured to power down when nobody is using it. The screensaver and sleep timer both have to be turned off, and the same two Android settings decide whether it comes back after a power cut. See Keep it running unattended.
