Samsung commercial displays running Tizen have a computer built into the panel. That means signage software can run on the display itself, with no player mounted behind it and no HDMI cable between the two.
Samsung calls this the Samsung Smart Signage Platform, which is why these displays are usually sold and discussed as SSSP displays. If you have been given a spec sheet that says SSSP, this is the page you want.
Screenly installs directly onto the display and manages it alongside every other Screenly screen.
How it works
You point the display at a URL from its own settings menu. It installs Screenly, shows a pairing code, and you enter that code in your dashboard.
From then on the display is a screen in your fleet, with the same playlists, scheduling, and remote monitoring as any other.
What it is good for
Fleets of SSSP displays, where this is usually the tidiest option available. Every player you do not mount is a device that cannot be unplugged, stolen, knocked loose, or fail on its own.
Installations where there is physically nowhere to put a player. A wall-mounted panel with no recess behind it has no good home for a separate box.
What to weigh against it
Support is for Samsung commercial displays. Consumer televisions do not allow custom app installation, so there is no way to install Screenly on them. For those, use a separate device over HDMI, such as a Fire TV Stick or an Android box.
The display also runs its own power schedule, independent of Screenly. A display switched off on its own timer shows nothing, however healthy it looks in your dashboard.
