# Supported formats


> Every image, video and audio format Screenly accepts, what it does to them on upload, and what it rejects.
Upload what you have. Screenly checks the file and, for video, re-encodes it so it plays on every kind of device in your fleet.

## Images

JPG and JPEG, PNG, BMP, TIFF, WebP, HEIC, and GIF.

> [!NOTE]
> Animated GIFs do not animate as uploaded images; only the first frame shows. To play one, put it on a web page and add that page instead.

## Video

MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, MPG and MPEG, WebM, OGG, FLV, M4V, WMV, and ASF.

YouTube and Vimeo URLs work as content too: paste the video URL rather than downloading the file.

## Audio

MP3 at up to 320 kbps, and FLAC.

## Documents

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and their Google and Apple equivalents are rejected on upload. Export them first; [Presentations and documents](/docs/content/types/presentations-and-documents/) and [Spreadsheets](/docs/content/types/spreadsheets/) cover how, and which export format suits which case.

## Web pages and streams

Any URL for a web page. Stream URLs beginning `rtsp://`, `rtp://`, or `v4l2://`.

## What happens on upload

The file is validated, and video is re-encoded centrally so that one upload serves a mixed fleet of Screenly players, Player Max devices, and Screenly Anywhere screens without you preparing separate files.

You do not need to check codecs, transcode anything, or produce multiple versions. Upload the source file.

Processing takes a moment for an image and considerably longer for a large video. The item appears in the library straight away and becomes available to playlists once processing finishes. A video that never shows a duration did not finish processing: delete it and upload it again.

## Recommended settings

If you are producing content specifically for signage, this encodes best:

| Frame rate | 30 fps maximum |
| Codec | h264, profile high, level 4.1 |
| Quality | CRF 20 |
| Audio | MP3 |

Files outside these settings still play. Performance varies more by device.

## Limits

No limit on the number of files, no limit on the size of any one of them, and no limit on how many playlists you build. Fair use in our terms of service is the only constraint.

Resolution is capped by plan rather than by file: 1080p on Starter, and 4K on Business and Enterprise when the device can do 4K.
