# Transitions

> How one item gives way to the next: push, fade in, or dissolve.
A playlist can move between items with a transition rather than a hard cut.

| Transition | Effect |
| --- | --- |
| Push | The next item slides in over the last. |
| Fade in | The next item fades up. |
| Dissolve | One item cross-fades into the next. |

## Choosing one

A hard cut is fine and often better. Transitions cost a fraction of a second of screen time each, and on a rotation of short items that adds up.

They earn their place where the cut itself is distracting: between images of very different brightness, or on a screen someone sits near for a long time.

Pick one and use it throughout. A playlist that changes transition between items looks like a mistake rather than a choice.
