How to get it

ScreenlyOS comes preinstalled on Screenly Players and Sharp displays, and you can install it yourself on a Raspberry Pi or a Scala player.

ScreenlyOS is included with your subscription, updates included. It is never a separate line item, and buying our hardware is not a condition of anything.

There are two ways to get a device running it: buy hardware with it already installed, or install it yourself on hardware you have.

Hardware that arrives with it installed

The Screenly Player is Raspberry Pi based and shows content at up to 1080p. The Screenly Player Max is the more powerful model, goes up to 4K, and adds a TPM and Secure Boot for environments with stricter requirements. Both arrive tuned to the hardware, so you plug in the display and the network, turn it on, and it shows a pairing code.

Sharp ships ScreenlyOS preloaded on some of its large-format displays, with a Raspberry Pi Compute Module built into the panel. Nothing plugs in and nothing hangs off the back. The display is the device.

This is the most hands-off route, and the one to pick if you are buying hardware anyway.

Install it yourself

You can put ScreenlyOS on hardware you already own. We support two kinds today, and each has its own guide because the way the image gets onto the device differs.

A Raspberry Pi becomes a full ScreenlyOS device. You download the image and write it to an SD card. It shows content at up to 1080p and behaves the same as a Screenly Player in almost every respect. This is the fastest way to try ScreenlyOS on real hardware before committing to a purchase.

A Scala player can be converted to ScreenlyOS, which keeps a fleet that is already mounted behind displays. The image for these is not a public download, so you contact support to get it.

A Raspberry Pi running our software is not a Screenly Player. We use that name for hardware we sell, which matters when you are reading hardware-specific pages.

Setting up a device with no keyboard

A ScreenlyOS device has no login and no desktop, so there is nothing to administer on it. Everything is configured from your dashboard once the device is paired, and pairing needs only the code shown on the display.

Wired ethernet needs nothing at all. For wireless or a static IP, the device shows a setup wizard on first boot, which you can complete with a USB keyboard. To skip the keyboard, put a network.yaml from the Network Config Generator on a USB drive and the device reads it on first boot, so a screen in a ceiling mount needs nothing attached to it.
