Reboot and delete

Restarting a screen remotely, why there is no scheduled reboot, and what deleting a screen actually does.

Reboot

On the screen’s Actions tab, available on ScreenlyOS screens that are currently online. It restarts the device.

It is worth trying when a screen is online, in sync, and still showing something wrong, which usually means the player rather than the content. It will not help a screen that is offline, because the command cannot reach it.

Screenly Anywhere screens cannot be rebooted from the dashboard, because Screenly is an app on someone else’s operating system there and cannot restart the device. Reloading the app or the page is the equivalent.

There is no scheduled reboot

Deliberately.

Booting is the riskiest thing a device does. It is where a marginal power supply shows up, where a corrupted card stops being readable, and where a player that had been running fine for months fails to come back. A screen rebooting nightly takes that risk 365 times a year, and one that does not come back needs somebody to drive to it.

An occasional manual reboot is fine. A screen that needs regular reboots to keep working has a fault worth reporting, not a schedule worth automating. The Details tab will usually name it.

Delete

Also on the Actions tab. It removes the screen from the workspace permanently and cannot be undone.

The device itself is not wiped. It returns to showing a pairing code and can be connected again, to this workspace or another.

Before deleting, consider whether you want disable instead. Disabling frees the license too, keeps everything, and is reversible. Delete when the device is genuinely gone.
