# Manage members

> Change a role, disable somebody without removing them, remove them entirely, and transfer ownership.
The members list is under **Settings**, then **Members**. Each row has a menu.

## Change a role

Pick the new role and save. It applies immediately, and nothing they made is affected.

You cannot change the Owner's role from here, cannot change someone holding the same role as you, and cannot change your own. An Admin can only assign Billing Manager or User.

## Disable

An access switch, not a deletion. A disabled member cannot sign in to the workspace, and everything they made stays exactly where it is.

Re-enabling is immediate: no new invitation, and no waiting for them to accept one.

This is the right action for somebody on leave, a contractor between phases, or anybody whose access should stop today and may resume. It also frees a seat on Starter, where disabled members do not count against the limit.

Status is colour-coded in the list: green for active, orange with a date for a member whose access expires, red for disabled.

## Remove

Revokes access immediately and takes the person out of the workspace. Their Screenly account is untouched and their other workspaces are unaffected.

You can remove yourself, unless you are the Owner.

Disabling is usually the better first move. It is reversible in one click; removing means a fresh invitation and waiting for them to accept.

## Transfer ownership

There is exactly one Owner, so transferring means giving it up.

1. Open the member's row menu and choose **Change role**.
2. Select **Owner**.
3. Type the workspace name to confirm.

The confirmation step is deliberate, because the action cannot be reversed by you afterwards. Your own role becomes Admin, and only the new Owner can transfer it back.

> [!IMPORTANT]
> Do this before somebody leaves, not after. Recovering a workspace whose Owner is gone takes two to five days of identity verification, with no guaranteed maximum. See [Support PIN and account recovery](/docs/account/support/support-and-recovery/).
