The screen is half of every digital signage setup, and it is the half where buyers get the least straight advice, because most guides are written by someone with displays to sell.

Display, monitor, screen, TV: what the words mean
The terms get used interchangeably, and mostly that is fine. In practice there are three categories.
Consumer TVs. These are built for a few hours of evening viewing. They are inexpensive, widely available, and perfectly serviceable for many indoor signage uses.
Commercial displays. These are screens built for signage duty. They are rated for long or continuous operation, they are brighter, and they are designed to run in portrait as well as landscape, with commercial warranties and controls made for fleets rather than living rooms.
Desktop monitors. These are occasionally used for small-format signage at close range. They work, but they lack TV-scale sizes and usually cost more per inch. For most signage, a TV or commercial display is the better fit.
A digital signage monitor or display, in other words, is defined by the job, not the label on the box. The real question is which category the job needs.
Commercial display or consumer TV?
This is the central buying decision, and the honest answer is that it depends on duty, environment, and stakes.
A consumer TV is usually fine when the screen runs during business hours rather than around the clock, the space is normally lit, the screen hangs in landscape, and a failure would be an annoyance rather than a business problem. This describes a great deal of real-world signage, which is why so much of it runs happily on ordinary TVs.
A commercial display earns its price when any of the following are true.
- The screen runs long hours or 24/7. Commercial panels are rated for it. Consumer TVs are not, and running them continuously shortens their lives.
- The environment is bright. Sunlit rooms and window placements need more brightness than consumer TVs deliver (more on numbers below).
- You need portrait. Many consumer TVs are not designed to run rotated, because heat management and panel behavior assume landscape. Commercial displays support portrait properly.
- The warranty matters. Consumer warranties commonly exclude commercial use, and using a consumer TV as signage can void coverage. Commercial warranties are written for exactly this duty, often with on-site terms.
- You are deploying a fleet. Commercial lines offer consistent availability of the same model over time, plus remote control protocols that make managing many screens easier.
There is no virtue in overbuying. Match the screen to the job, and put the savings toward more screens.
The specs that matter
Brightness
Brightness is measured in nits (cd/m²), and it is the spec most likely to make or break a deployment. As practical guidance, ordinary indoor spaces are fine around 250 to 350 nits, which is standard TV territory. Bright indoor spaces such as atriums, glass-fronted lobbies, and shop floors under strong lighting want 450 to 700 nits. Window-facing screens battling direct daylight need high-brightness commercial panels, commonly 1,500 to 3,000 nits or more. Buying a standard-brightness screen for a sunny window is the classic signage mistake, because the content is invisible exactly when the most people walk past.
Size and resolution
Choose size from viewing distance. Text must be readable from where people actually stand, and when in doubt, go bigger, because too small is the second classic mistake. On resolution, 1080p remains sufficient for most signage viewed at typical distances. 4K pays off on large screens viewed close up and for dense content such as dashboards and detailed layouts. Beyond 4K adds cost without adding legibility at signage distances.
Orientation
Decide portrait or landscape before buying, not after. Portrait suits directories, menus, and posters, while landscape suits most everything else. If portrait is the plan, confirm the display explicitly supports portrait operation, which is a commercial-display strength.
Panel technology: LCD, LED, and OLED
Most signage displays are LCD panels with LED backlighting, and for most deployments that is the right default, since it is mature, affordable, and bright enough. OLED offers superior contrast at premium prices, with brightness limits and burn-in considerations that make it a niche choice for signage showing static layouts. Ports and control
HDMI input is the one non-negotiable, since it is how a signage player connects, and any screen with HDMI works with Screenly. Beyond that, useful commercial features include RS-232 or HDMI-CEC control (so displays can be powered on a schedule), multiple inputs, and accessible port placement for clean mounting.
Operating-hours rating
Commercial displays state a duty rating, commonly 16/7 or 24/7. Match it to reality. A screen that genuinely runs around the clock should carry a 24/7 rating, and a business-hours screen does not need to pay for one.
Mounting, bezels, and power
Confirm VESA mount compatibility and the wall’s suitability for the weight. Slim bezels matter mainly for multi-screen arrays. Check power placement early as well, because the most common installation surprise is an outlet in the wrong place.
Matching the display to the environment
Standard indoor spaces. Consumer TVs or entry commercial displays at standard brightness work well here. This covers offices, most retail interiors, cafes, and hallways.
Bright indoor and window-facing placements. Step up in brightness first and size second. For content facing out through glass, high-brightness commercial panels are the difference between a sign and a black mirror.
Displays for outdoor use. Outdoor signage displays are their own hardware class, with IP-rated weather protection, sunlight-readable brightness, and thermal management for heat and cold. They come either as purpose-built outdoor displays or as standard panels in outdoor-rated enclosures. They cost a multiple of indoor screens, and that is unavoidable physics rather than markup. The practical guidance is to buy outdoor-rated hardware for outdoor placements, and to consider whether a bright window-facing indoor display achieves the goal at a fraction of the cost.
Small-format and close-range spots. Room signs and counter displays suit small commercial panels or, at modest scale, ordinary monitors. The same rules apply at small size, meaning readable type, adequate brightness, and sensible mounting.
What you can safely ignore
Display marketing emphasizes a few things that signage rarely needs. These include smart TV app ecosystems (your player provides the intelligence, and the display just needs to show it), curved panels, ultra-high refresh rates, and gaming-oriented specs. Spend on brightness, duty rating, and warranty instead, because those are the specs that show up in year three.
