Release Notes

May 2026

Screenly release notes from May 2026.

May 28

Fixed emails silently failing for previously bounced addresses

If an email to you had bounced in the past, for example because your inbox was temporarily full, you may have silently stopped receiving emails from us altogether, including login links, workspace invitations, and confirmation codes, even after the original problem was gone. That’s now fixed automatically, so these emails reach you reliably again.

May 27

A maximum length for a few account and workspace fields, and safer playlist version handling

A few fields in Account and Workspace Settings, like your company name, timezone, or branding logo URL, now have a maximum length. Entering something unusually long now shows a clear error instead of silently going through. Everyday entries aren’t affected.

Improvements

  • Improved compatibility for screens running a newer ScreenlyOS version than we officially support, preventing a rare playlist issue.

More reliable real-time connections to screens, and restored alert emails

Screen offline/online alert emails (“your screen is unreachable” and “your screen is back online”) had stopped sending due to a template error. They’re fixed and sending correctly again.

More reliable real-time connections to screens

When a screen is online, it holds open a live connection to Screenly so commands like restart, resync, or a settings update reach it instantly instead of waiting on the next scheduled check-in.

We tightened up that connection on two fronts: players opening it were sometimes being incorrectly rejected, and delivery of commands sent over it is now more reliable end to end. If you’ve pushed a restart or resync from the dashboard and it didn’t seem to land, that should happen less often now.

API change

Our v4.1 API is now stable and is the recommended API to build on going forward. v3 is being phased out.

If this affects you: if you’re still integrating against v3, plan to migrate to v4.1.

Password login removed

Password login has been removed. If you used to sign in with an email and password, you’ll now get a one-time code sent to your email instead: enter it to sign in, no password to remember or reset.

If you sign in through Google, GitHub, Microsoft, or SAML, nothing changes.

Read more about why we made this change.

May 20

Fixed login redirects after 2FA and SSO

Logging in via a deep link, for example from a support article or a shared URL, could drop you on the dashboard instead of the page you were originally headed to if your login went through two-factor authentication or SSO. Signing in through either path now correctly lands you back on the page you started from.

Improvements

  • Fixed a security issue in how playlist details are displayed in the dashboard. No action is needed on your part.
  • Applied security updates to third-party dependencies across several of our services.

Fixes

  • “Screen back online” email, Slack, and PagerDuty notifications were failing to send in some cases. They now go out reliably again.
May 13

mTLS support for web assets, and a browser extension fix

Web (URL) assets can now be configured to present a client TLS certificate when the player loads them. Look for the new “Allow sending client certificate” switch when editing a Web asset under Content, useful if you’re embedding content behind an endpoint protected by mutual TLS.

This is supported on devices running ScreenlyOS. Screenly Anywhere doesn’t support mTLS for web assets yet.

Fixes

  • Fixed the Screenly browser extension being blocked from saving web pages as assets.

Connect your screens to Tailscale, and free trials reserved for first-time workspaces

Screenly now integrates with Tailscale. Connect your Tailscale account from Settings > Security with an OAuth client ID, secret, and ACL tag, and your workspace’s screens can join your private Tailscale network automatically, no VPN client to sideload onto each device by hand. This is available for devices running ScreenlyOS.

If the connection fails, you’ll now see a specific reason, bad credentials, a missing OAuth scope, or a tag that isn’t defined in your Tailscale ACL policy, instead of a generic error.

The 14-day free trial is now reserved for first-time workspaces

Every new signup used to get a 14-day free trial regardless of history, which meant someone could get repeated free trials by creating or joining multiple workspaces. The trial is now only granted the first time: if you already belong to, or have a pending invitation to, another workspace, a new workspace won’t come with a second free trial.

We also changed what happens when a trial runs out. It used to auto-convert into a paid subscription with no action on your part; now it simply ends, and you decide if and when to subscribe.

Improvements

  • The onboarding checklist on the dashboard now tracks progress for the whole workspace instead of per individual user, so a new teammate joining no longer sees steps as incomplete that the workspace has already finished. The small “% profile complete” bar under the sidebar has also been removed.

Fixes

  • New workspaces no longer start with a default “Play on All Screens” playlist that couldn’t be removed.
  • Fixed a crash on the Playlists page for some workspaces without an active subscription.

Fixed intermittent Power BI errors, and sharper onboarding tour videos

Fixed an issue where Power BI dashboards on screens would intermittently error after a Power BI capacity pause. They now continue working correctly.

Improvements

  • Audio Output can now be set from Screen Settings for x86-based Screenly Players like Screenly Player Max, not just Raspberry Pi devices.
  • The onboarding tour on the dashboard now shows sharper, smoother tutorial videos instead of grainy GIFs.
