Release Notes

What's new in Screenly: product updates, new features, and fixes.

Fix Dashboard

Your branding logos preview properly again

The light and dark logo previews in workspace branding showed a broken image instead of the logo you uploaded.

Fix Content

The Add content dialog sees your newest content

A folder you just renamed, or an app you just installed, now appears in a playlist's Add content dialog without reloading the page.

New API Apps

The apps API returns each app's description, icon and author

Apps on API v4 and v4.1 now include description, icon, author, homepage_url and categories, so a catalog built on the API no longer needs a second source for them.

New Dashboard

A new Lobby page for your workspaces and invitations

The Lobby is where you land when you sign in. It lists every workspace you belong to with your role in it, and your pending invitations, which you can now accept or decline in Screenly.

New Apps

App settings can hide options that do not apply

An app's settings form can reveal a setting only when it is relevant to your other choices, and present its settings in a deliberate order. App developers declare both in the setting's schema.

Fix Players

Screen names with accents and non-Latin characters reach your screens intact

A screen's name, location or tags containing characters outside the Latin alphabet arrived on the player as strings of symbols instead of the text you typed.

Fix Dashboard

A screen now shows the player model it actually is

Every Screenly Player Max was identified as a Mk1 with the Mk1 photo whatever its revision, and Raspberry Pi based screens were not showing their board revision.

Improvement Dashboard

The dashboard refreshes when you come back to it

Returning to a dashboard tab you left open reloads what it shows instead of leaving minutes-old information on screen.

Fix Apps

Old links to the Apps pages work again

Bookmarks and links pointing at the previous Apps addresses now redirect to the current App store and Apps pages instead of hitting an error.

Removed Dashboard Breaking change

Landscape, Portrait, Full HD, UHD and Anywhere are no longer automatic labels

The five labels Screenly maintained from a screen's own properties are now ordinary labels you own. They keep the screens they were on and no longer update themselves.

Removed API Breaking change

The label type field on the API now has three values instead of nine

With automatic labels gone, the API's label type enum drops landscape, portrait, full_hd, uhd, anywhere and virtual, leaving all-screens, manual and screen.

Improvement Apps

The App Store and your installed apps are now separate sections

Browsing available apps and managing the ones you have installed are two sidebar entries instead of one page with a button between them.

Fix Content Players

Pages behind a login are no longer turned away before they load

A page that needs a saved session to sign in was turned away before it was loaded, so those screens showed nothing at all.

Fix Dashboard

Times in the dashboard follow your device's clock

The dashboard reads 12-hour or 24-hour time from your own device instead of showing AM/PM to everyone.

Improvement API Breaking change

last_ping is no longer null for a screen that has never connected

On API v3 and v4, a screen's last_ping is always a timestamp, seeded from when the screen was created, so a null value no longer marks a screen that has never checked in.

Fix Content Players

Pages saved with the browser extension show the signed-in view again

A page added through the extension with Save Authentication captured the logged-out view, or stopped showing the signed-in one after a while, when Screenly rendered it on our servers.

Improvement Dashboard

Signing in looks and behaves like the rest of Screenly

The sign-in pages were rebuilt to match the dashboard, with errors that appear as notifications and passkeys that autofill.

Improvement Dashboard

A new look for the dashboard, with navigation in one place

The dashboard has been redesigned, and everything that used to sit in the top bar now lives in a single grouped sidebar.

Removed Dashboard

Global search and the New menu have been removed

The search box that spanned screens, content and playlists is gone, along with the New quick-create menu, both of which lived in the removed top bar.

Improvement Content

Uploads keep running after you close the dialog

Uploads keep running with progress and a time estimate after you close the dialog, and pages no longer reload as you move around the Content section.

Improvement Dashboard

Workspace and account settings work like the rest of Screenly

Settings pages now use the same horizontal tabs as playlists and screens, with branding folded into the Workspace tab and one save bar per tab.

New Apps

Apps can ask you to pick a Slack channel

An app that posts to or reads from Slack now offers a channel picker in its settings instead of asking you to paste a channel ID.
