2026.06.1
- Fix
Balena devices from before the Anthias rename keep or recover their playlist on upgrade
A balena device that still keeps its data under the old Screenly folder names now carries its playlist and content over when it upgrades, and a device that already came up empty gets them back.
- Improvement
Smoother video on Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi 5
Video on a Raspberry Pi 4 or Pi 5 no longer stutters along at 8 to 12 frames per second. A 30 fps clip now plays at or close to its own frame rate, and the viewer uses less CPU doing it.
- Fix
Raspberry Pi 2 and Pi 3 play video instead of a black screen
Every video on a Raspberry Pi 2 or Pi 3 showed a black screen while images and web pages played as usual. Video plays now, and in the project's testing a Pi 3 handled 1080p with frames to spare.
- Fix
Screen rotation turns web pages and images on Raspberry Pi 4
On a Raspberry Pi 4, the Screen rotation setting now turns the whole display, so web pages and images go portrait or upside down along with video.
- Fix
x86 displays no longer freeze on a heavy web page
An x86 device keeps updating its screen when it moves to a complex web page, instead of freezing on the last frame until the container restarts.
- Fixes and improvements
Raspberry Pi 2 and Pi 3 viewers retry a crashed start, and other fixes
A Raspberry Pi 4 with no display attached waits for one on balenaOS 2026.x, and device logs on every board no longer fill up with Qt debug output.
2026.06.0
- Fix
Raspberry Pi 4 devices on balena no longer reboot in a loop
When Anthias 2026.05.2 rolled out, every Raspberry Pi 4 on the official balena fleet kept rebooting and couldn't take the release. The fleet setting was corrected by hand right away, and 2026.06.0 makes sure the next release doesn't bring the loop back.
- Fixes and improvements
A Raspberry Pi 4 with no screen attached waits for one, and other improvements
For contributors, a new script moves devices on the official balena fleets to the latest balenaOS and the latest stable release, a small batch at a time.
2026.05.2
- Fix
Raspberry Pi 4 and balena x86 players no longer get stuck on the boot splash
A Raspberry Pi 4, or an x86 PC running the balena image, could boot to the Anthias splash screen and stay there. Both now get past the splash and play your content.
- Fix
Upgraded devices no longer crash-loop on a permission error in anthias.conf
A device upgraded from an older Anthias release starts the viewer on the first boot of 2026.05.2, instead of restarting it over and over with a PermissionError on anthias.conf.
- Fix
Raspberry Pi 2 and Pi 3 wait for a display instead of crash-looping
With no screen connected at boot, or a TV that is slow to wake up, the viewer on a Raspberry Pi 2 or 3 now waits and starts on its own once a display appears.
- Improvement
Devices installed from a disk image now get updates over the air
A device flashed from an Anthias 2026.05.2 disk image or newer follows the latest stable release, instead of staying on the version you downloaded.
- Fixes and improvements
Raspberry Pi 5 no longer fills its storage with core dumps, and other fixes
The balena Releases page shows the real Anthias version, the official Raspberry Pi 5 balena fleet gets the memory setting 4K HEVC playback needs, and the docs cover the Raspberry Pi Imager write error on macOS.
