Navigation used to be split in two: a sidebar for sections and a top bar for everything else.
Which one held what was never obvious, and the top bar had grown over the years into a row of
unrelated controls. There is one sidebar now, with its entries grouped, and no top bar. Your
workspace, your account and your notifications are all in it, so there is a single place to look
and less distance to travel between the things you use most.

Notifications open as a dialog in the middle of the screen rather than a panel sliding in from
the right edge, with a count on the sidebar entry showing how many you have. A long notification
is shortened to its first few lines with a Show more to open it, so one wordy notification no
longer pushes the rest of the list out of sight.

On a narrow window the sidebar becomes a drawer you open when you need it. On a wide one it stays
open, since collapsing it saved a few pixels and cost you the labels.

Screenly 26.8.0: Global search and the New menu have been removed

The top bar held a search box that looked across screens, content and playlists at once, and a
New menu for creating things from anywhere. Both are gone with the bar, and neither has a
replacement in the sidebar.

Each section still has its own search, which is where most searching happened: Screens, Content
and Playlists all filter their own lists, and those searches know about the things particular to
them, such as labels on screens. Creating things still starts from the section you want it in.

If you leaned on the global box to jump between sections by name, this is a step back for you
specifically, and worth telling us about.

Screenly 26.8.0: Uploads keep running while you move around the dashboard

Uploading a large video meant staying on the Content page until it finished. Uploads ran in the
background there, but moving to Screens or Playlists loaded a new page and cancelled every upload
still in progress. For a long video over an ordinary connection, that is a real chunk of
someone’s afternoon spent not using Screenly.

Content is now part of the same single-page dashboard as the rest of Screenly, so uploads keep
running while you go elsewhere. Close the upload dialog, go set up a playlist, and the upload
carries on. Reopen the dialog to see its progress and an estimate of the time left, or start more
uploads.

Moving between Content and a single item no longer reloads the page either, so browsing your
library feels like one place rather than a series of loads.

Screenly 26.8.0: Workspace and account settings work like the rest of Screenly

Settings were laid out their own way, with a list of pages down the side, so moving between a
screen’s settings and your workspace’s meant adjusting to a different arrangement of the same
kinds of controls.

Workspace and account settings now use the horizontal tabs that playlists and screens use, and
each tab has one save bar, so it is clear what a save applies to. Branding moved into the
Workspace tab rather than standing alone, and saves together with the workspace name.

An old link or bookmark to the branding page now opens Settings > Workspace, where branding is.

Screenly 26.8.0: Apps can ask you to pick a Slack channel

Apps can now work with Slack through your workspace’s Slack connection, and an app that needs a
channel can ask for one directly. Its settings show a picker listing the channels available to
that connection, so there is no channel ID to look up in Slack and paste in.

If Slack is not connected yet, the setting shows a Connect to Slack button that takes you to
Settings > Integrations, rather than failing later.

Screenly 26.8.0: Playlist transitions show a preview, and other improvements

Improvements

Playlist transitions are shown as animated preview cards, so you can see what each one does
before choosing it. The option previously called “None” is now “Instant”.

A playlist with no screens assigned now shows a “Select screens for your playlist” prompt
instead of an empty table, and explains how assignment by label works.

The dashboard has a new typeface, which also loads faster than the one it replaces.
