Players pick only resolutions they can run
A display tells the player which resolutions and refresh rates it accepts, and the player used to take that list at its word. Sometimes the player’s own graphics chip couldn’t run one of them, so the player asked for a mode that could never work, the request was rejected, and the screen fell back to a default mode instead of the one the player meant to set. It showed up most on a Raspberry Pi 4 over HDMI, with a display offering 1080p at 120Hz.
A player now picks only from resolutions that both the display and the player can run.
